Get Inspired with Dr. Emad Rahim

Dr. Rahim, joins our conference with his inspiring life story as a genocide survivor and refugee of the Khmer Rouge Killing Fields of Cambodia, developed the S.A.L.T. model of Surviving, Adapting, Loving, and Transforming as a means of helping him overcome the struggles of his youth, including prejudice, abuse, childhood violence, and dyslexia.

Sharing candidly from the dramatic, and sometimes heartbreaking details, Emad reveals how the leadership principles of S.A.L.T. helped him develop the courage, determination, and perseverance that led to his becoming a multi-credentialed, highly-sought-after academic executive, educator, award-winning author, mentor, and his greatest joy, husband and father.

ReInventing Education with Ben Nelson

Ben Nelson is the Founder of Minerva, and a visionary with a passion to reinvent higher education. Prior to Minerva, Nelson spent more than 10 years at Snapfish, where he helped build the company from startup to the world’s largest personal publishing service. With over 42 million transactions across 22 countries, nearly five times greater than its closest competitor, Snapfish is among the top e-commerce services in the world. Serving as CEO from 2005 through 2010, Nelson began his tenure at Snapfish by leading the company’s sale to Hewlett Packard for $300 million.

Prior to joining Snapfish, Nelson was President and CEO of Community Ventures, a network of locally branded portals for American communities.

Nelson’s passion for reforming undergraduate education was first sparked at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, where he received a B.S. in Economics. After creating a blueprint for curricular reform in his first year of school, Nelson went on to become the chair of the Student Committee on Undergraduate Education (SCUE), a pedagogical think tank that is the oldest and only non-elected student government body at the University of Pennsylvania.

Fireside Chat with Dr. Jordan Shapiro

For the past two years, the pandemic has disrupted our kids' classrooms, as well as our homes, offices, and professional workspaces. Our general lives have been upended in innumerable ways—some obvious and others subtle. What does it take to be a parent or an educator now? What does child-rearing require in such an uncertain climate? What does it mean to raise kids well? In this ‘fireside chat’ session, Dr. Jordan Shapiro will answer some of these questions, while sharing his thoughts on the role of technology in facilitating a “new normal.” He’ll provide suggestions for parents on how to become empathetic and supportive, while still maintaining rigorous intellectual expectations. He’ll teach us to encourage our children’s holistic success and prepare them for a lifetime of fulfillment.
